The Early 2000's

"This play is a love letter to the 2000s as a whole decade," Alyssa writes in the preface to the play (3). Since this play is about teenagers, and popular culture is essential to the teenage identity, learning about the early 2000's can help actors better understand their characters.

Upstate New York is generally considered to be the area north of New York City and its immediate suburbs. In the 2000s, this area was predominately white. The average income was around $55,000 per year. Some of the more well-known cities in this area are Buffalo, Rochester, Ithica, Albany, and Syracuse.
